The Best Shower Routine for Healthier Hair

The Best Shower Routine for Healthier Hair

Hey friends! I don’t know about you, but showers are this weird little sanctuary in my day. Between packing orders and school runs, my shower is honestly the one me time I get, and over the years I’ve learned that how I shower actually changes how my hair feels.

So I wanted to share what I’ve learned: the completely simple routine that actually works for healthier, softer hair. I mean, you don’t even have time to think about this stuff, right? But trust me a few tiny tweaks can make a massive difference.

1. Ditch the super super Hot Water

I absolutely love a piping hot shower (ask Matt) but super hot water can strip your hair (and skin!) of its natural oils. These oils are actually what keep your hair smooth, shiny, and not frizzy. So try turning it down just a touch!

Dermatologists even suggest shorter, moderate‑temperature showers for overall skin and hair health.

2. Shampoo Less Often

You’ve probably heard this one before. You don’t need to shampoo every shower (especially if you have normal or curly hair). Shampooing too frequently can strip your scalp of its natural oils, which leads your body to produce more oil to compensate. That paradoxically results in tight roots but dry ends.

Instead, aim to:

  • Shampoo 2–3 times/week if your hair isn’t super oily
  • Rinse with just water or conditioner (co‑wash) between shampoos

Your hair’s natural sebum is actually its own built‑in conditioner!

3. Let the Conditioner Really Do Its Thing

After shampooing, make sure you focus conditioner on the lengths and ends of your hair and  not on your scalp. That’s where dryness tends to hit first, and this simple switch makes your hair feel softer and looks healthier faster.

My little tip? After conditioning, turn the water a tinsey bit cooler just before rinsing. It helps seal the hair cuticle and leaves the surface smooth.

4. Consider Your Water Quality (Big One Here)

Most tap water contains chlorine and other treatment chemicals that help make the water safe, but they can also affect your hair’s natural oils.

That’s why so many people are investing in a shower filter.

When I first made the switch, It made a noticeable difference in how my hair felt in just weeks. Softer, less frizz, more shine — all the things we want without adding another product to the cupboard.

5. Give Your Scalp a Little Love

Our scalps need attention too! I like doing a gentle massage with my fingertips in the shower which increases circulation and helps your hair follicles stay happy

And honestly, it feels amazing. Like a little day spa at home (sorta?). Try it for 1–2 minutes next time 😊 you’ll notice the difference.

6. Avoid Aggressive Towel Rubbing

After your shower, gently squeeze your hair with a soft towel instead of rubbing. Excess friction can rough up the hair cuticle and cause breakage (aka split ends and frizz express).

7. Time Your Hair Washes with Your Week

If you’re busy like me, planning your hair wash around when you don’t have to rush will make the whole experience more enjoyable (and less damaging, because rushed showers = hot water + hurred shampooing = sad hair). I usually wash my hair on Thursday evenings when the kids are in bed - it’s become my little self‑care ritual.

So, in my humble opinion, the key to the best shower routine is as follows: ✔ Warm, not burning water ✔ Less frequent shampooing ✔ Conditioner in the right places ✔ A little scalp love ✔ Water that supports your hair, not works against it

Make your shower work for you and your life. And I truly believe, it’s the little things that bring the biggest benefits 💛
